ASPERGER'S DISORDER

This disorder differs from autistic disorder in that it appears to have a later onset and there is no significant delay in cognitive and language development (APA, 2000). Mental retardation is not usually observed. This is a continuum and a lifelong disorder.

Presenting Signs and Symptoms:

  • Recognized later than autistic disorder.
  • No significant delays in cognitive and language development.
  • Severe and sustained impairment in social interactions.
  • Development of restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests and activities resembling autistic disorder.
  • Might have delayed motor development milestones with clumsiness noted in preschool.
  • Social interaction problems more noticeable when child enters school.
  • Problems with empathy and modulating social relationships might continue into adulthood.
