PSYCHOSEXUAL THEORY - FREUD

SIGMUND FREUD

(1856-1939)

Freud is described by Maddi as a man deeply serious about and committed to his work, his family, his colleagues, and his friends.

Freud viewed the basic tendency of living as maximizing instinctual gratification, while minimizing punishment and guilt. This view includes a position on:
1. Basic drives or instincts
2. Level of awareness and agencies of mind
3. Sources of punishment and guilt
4. Mechanics of defense whereby instincts are satisfied while punishment and guilt are avoided.

Oral Phase - Birth to 18 months
Gratification sites mouth, lips and tongue

Focus on pleasures
Sucking and biting are favorite activities
Id present at birth
Ego develops gradually

Anal Phase - 18months to 3 years
Anus and surrounding area are major source of interest.

Toilet training
Focus of pleasure is the anus
Holding it in and letting it go are greatly enjoyed

Phallic/Oedipal Phase - 4years to 5 years
Focus of pleasure is the genitalia, stimulation, and excitement.

Penis is organ of interest
Masturbation is common
Penis envy, oedipal complex

Latency Phase - 6years to 11years
Resolution of oedipal complex.

Sexual impulse was suppressed in the process of learning
Fairly calm during their grammar school years
Quiet busy masturbating and playing DOCTOR.
These children were, at least, quieter than their modern counterparts.

Genital Phase - 12years to 18years
Final stage of psychosexual development

Begins with puberty and the biologic capacity for orgasm.
Represents the resurgence of the sex drive in adolescence

Focusing in sexual intercourse
Masturbation, oral sex, homosexuality, and many other things are acceptable.
Involves for the capacity for true intimacy.
