5. Describe at least 5 arguments by citing the advantages why the nursing process may be considered as an effective tool in psychiatric nursing intervention.
The nursing process is an interactive, problem-solving process. It is systematic and individualized way to achieve outcome of nursing care. The nursing process respects the individual’s autonomy and freedom to make decisions and be involved in nursing care. The nurse and the patient emerge as partner in a relationship built on trust and directed toward maximizing the patient’s strengths, maintaining integrity, and promoting adaptive response to stress. In dealing with psychiatric patients, the nursing process can present unique challenges. Emotional problems may be vague, not visible like many physiological disruptions. The nursing process provides a means of applying the knowledge and skills in giving quality care and identifies appropriate treatments and approaches according to patient’s need.
6. Discuss why should psychiatric nursing be considered a part of all nursing.
In nursing practice, we are all dealing with human life. We handle human with different behaviors, attitudes and values. Now, nursing is not merely focusing on physical but rather in holistic approach including psychological, emotional, cognitive and even spiritually. For example, in maternal and child, there is so called postpartum blues of the mother which needs to be treated emotionally and psychologically. Another example is caring for elderly patients who had medical problems and experiencing pain. Example, in cancer patients in which we encourage them to fight and be strong under suffering from cancer pain. We let them understand the principle of growth through human suffering in which we teach that suffering and even bodily death when endured with courage can and should be used to promote personal growth in both private and community living. We are also here to help them cope positively and all the stresses that life could bring. All of these were show that psychiatric nursing is essential in all part or field in nursing.
7. In your own opinion, what should be the basic preparation of a psychiatric nurse specialist? Support your answer with not less than 5 .
To be a psychiatric nurse specialist, one should have kindness in their heart, the most important for me for a nurse to be called a psychiatric nurse specialist. A good attitude and values are essential in dealing with people suffering from disorder of the mind. Also, a nurse must be knowledgeable so studying theories and all the concepts in psychiatric nursing are important. Having a strong personality has to be establish since you will handle different personalities and differences, and the situations are unpredictable. Assess yourself, know yourself….
Enhance also the ability to communicate effectively since it is important to know how to interact with people with different challenging behaviors.
Aside from achieving the degree of BSN, we also need to attend different seminars/ seminar discussions, lecture forum and individual conferences for further. We also need to engage in scholarly inquiry that will further illuminate the nature of learning and will ultimately shape future psychiatric nursing skills. Psychiatric nurses are prepared at the master's or doctoral level and practice in appropriate field such as psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric health related institution.
8. If you attempt at self-introspection now, how would you look at yourself differently shortly before and after the psychiatric nursing 1 course. Consider the following areas in your discussion
8.1. Knowledge gained
I was able to gained knowledge and deeper understanding of psychiatric nursing and other psychotherapeutic nursing interventions. I was able to identify and learned the real essence of nurse-patient relationship. The interpersonal relationships in nursing shouldn't longer be considered "inside the series of innate gifts". The relationship of the patient is the axis of the cares and it demands the formation based scientifically as the wisdom of the expert professional that dominates the science and the art of the care. And that will be our debt to Peplau’s work, to see things beyond what the naked eye can see through establishing relationship with our patient- as our chance to give care and our heart to our patient.
8.2. Skills developed
Through this, I understand the patient's situation, more than what I used to see and to this I was lead to a deeper understanding of what the nurse should be. I was able to learn the basic rules in the interactions and confrontations with the human beings, how to approach and to end a relationship, how to be therapeutic and to avoid non-therapeutic approaches. I was able to reach out and try different communication strategies. Patience and respect for the patient are essential.
I view life differently and I was able to experience opening to the life and the being. The being cannot describe or express from a different way to be itself. What others perceive is the personality or the person's existence.
The nursing knowledge should drive the care toward the solution of problems; but for it, as a nurse, I require ability in the identification of these, dexterity that is demonstrated in being able to go but there of the clinical history, of the medications, of the monitors and of the challenging behaviors that surround the patient; is to be able to discover in a look, in an expression or in a movement, the patient's expression that takes care.
8.3. Specific attitudinal changes
Our aspect of patient’s matter, as a human being, is that I can truly affirm that it is from experience rather than merely intellectually. I was able to appreciate the importance of the nurse's relationship with the patient that has interferences for the communication and those who are mentally incapable who needs our cry and empathy.
I learned to value the importance of listening. When I listen to a story, I hear the whole person. The words chosen, the look in the eyes, the body language and every action are given attention. This presupposes that I should have willingness to listen to every story and be changed by what I hear. The stories may be of event or of unforgettable memories, but every story told is a search for meaning and an attempt to make sense of an experience and understanding human behavior.
8.4. Identify and describe specific areas you feel the need to improve. How do you plan to do it?
Effective communication. I should read and study more on therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication. I also need to improve my way of handling my feeling specially when I am anxious and fearful. I remember when my patient had hallucinations and cannot answer back relevantly, I put him back to his ward and I admit that it is wrong way of handling him. Reading books and listening to my professor during discussion will help me a lot. In psychiatric nursing 2, I should always seek for supervision with my professor since it will help me a lot and I gain more knowledge.
