CONTRIBUTORS IN PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH

Linda Richards – first American psychiatric nurse; improved nursing care in psychiatric hospitals and organized educational programs in state mental hospitals in Illinois.

Johns Hopkins (1913) – first school of nursing to include a course in psychiatric nursing in its curriculum.

Nursing Mental Diseases – first psychiatric nursing textbook written by Harriet Bailey, published in 1920.

Hildegard Peplau – published Interpersonal relations in Nursing (1952) and Interpersonal techniques: The Crux of Psychiatric Nursing (1962); contributed and made the “nurse-patient relationship”.

Mellow’s Nursing Therapy – she described the proper approach of focusing on the client’s psychological needs and strengths (1968).

American Nurses Association (ANA) – developed standards of care.
